I'd kinda been intending to post some thoughts on Skyfall, but Yuletide is currently sucking away all my writing energy-- and which, progressing at its current rate of about two hundred words a day, will be finished approximately never.

Procrastinatorily, this morning I spent my allocated writing time greatly enjoying the [twitter.com profile] humblebrag feed. Even more than celebrities, parents are the best humblebraggers! I find parental humblebragging particularly irksome, because the kacang is not an especially advanced baby, so while everyone else is all, "Can you believe I put my baby to bed and when I came back ten minutes later, she'd taken off her swaddling and totally crawled to the other end of the cot! Such a little escape artist, so annoying, lol!" I'm like, whatever, my baby can't even roll over. The thing is, the kacang is uncoordinated because she's ridiculously huge, in fact so large that the doctor was worried about how fast she was growing and scheduled all these extra appointments to monitor her weight, but after all his extra measuring he came to the conclusion that she was, you know, just naturally big, and that I must just be feeding her super well.

Oh, oh! See what I just did there?

For a while my eldest had a perfectly round, kind of large head and looked just like Charlie Brown.

Is she a Very Serious Baby? She looks like a Very Serious Baby.

Not at all; she was a babble-and-laugh baby. I think she could sense that she wasn't really herself before she could talk.

Also she was an introvert from Day One, and would fuss until you put her in her basinet off by herself in another part of the room. Funny how that works.

I've known Very Serious Babies who remained Very Serious for life, and I've known others who carefully observed the world for a certain number of years and then concluded that, crazy as it might seem, it was apparentely supposed to be that way, and they could relax about it.

Oh, that's so cute! I can just see her grumpy little face. And in her head she's going, "Why must they keep interrupting? I can't hear myself think!"

The spouse's parents truly believe that introvert = shy = abnormal, and that introverts just need to have confidence and come out of their shells a little bit and then they won't have to live such lonely lives. There's just no talking to them.

Yes, he is, poor fellow.

And interesting point! I'd never thought of introversion as being a horizontal identity, but I guess that's mainly because my parents, spouse, and kid are all introverts like me, so I've managed to create a life inside a pleasantly quiet little bubble of introversion.

We always say that if the kidlet had been an extroverted S person we would have loved her anyway, but there would have been a lot more compromises (on ALL sides).

Awww! She's got some awesomely expressive eyebrows. Exasperation is written all over them. My youngest used to look at me like that too. (Come to think of it... she still does.)

Oh, yeah. Those moments are *awesome*, let me tell you. ;) They're (oof!) 20 and 13-this-week. I'd say I miss them when they were babies, but it's more like I miss having babies around. They themselves are always exactly who they're supposed to be, and they're awesome :)

Oh, she is judging you most sternly! What a boss.

A friend's kid was the most serious little thing as a baby. They said she smiled and I'm sure they were right, being her full time carers and all, but I never saw it. Now she smiles and laughs and pouts and gets angry and all that emotional stuff. I reckon she just spent the first year sussing us out and not wanting to give anything away. But who knows? They're babies and they aren't telling.

Before five months, she was very calm and quiet because she was so underweight. Once she gained weight, her personality emerged - very curious and determined and social. She will go up to strangers and interact, examines everything (with caution, unless it's electric in which case she just lunges at it) and is mostly calm-pleased punctuated by moments of happiness and angry frustration. She very rarely is sad, and is easily consoled.

Narith had a completely different personality. Narith had bouts of sadness if he wasn't being physically held or if he thought he'd done something wrong, traits that have definitely held. He wasn't at all adventurous or curious about the world and liked familiar spaces, exploring them in different ways while Maggie will opt for novelty every time.

I have a friend with identical twins, and they are very clearly diverging in personality as toddlers. If Kacang is sad, it's just her personality starting to show without being able to express the reason yet.

Babies: They Are Weird.

P.S. If you ever want to make a baby filter, put me on it! I love baby stories so much because it is freaky how they turn into humans.

Also I'm super impressed by your humblebrag, it's good work.

NONSENSE. ONLY MOTHERING SKILLS PRODUCE BIG BABIES.
