Via [personal profile] painless_j, this-- I guess, inevitable evolution that I nonetheless find extremely odd:

Yes, a K-pop video... in Indonesian. This odd hybrid, which is probably a sign of things to come, is the result of the winners of some Indonesian talent show being picked up by Korean management and sent to Korea to undergo idol training (is it just me, or is the phrase 'idol training' seriously dystopian?), then dispatched back to their homeland to further the Korean pop-culture obsession that currently has all of Asia in its grasp. The disconnect between the uber-K-pop styling and the language is so great that when I showed it to The Boy without telling him what it was, he looked at it blankly and said, "I don't understand what they're saying." Despite being completely fluent in Indonesian, his brain couldn't register that they weren't singing in Korean.

I mean, I'm enough of a dinosaur that I remember when Japanese pop culture was where it was all at. Even with the Korean juggernaut rolling ever onward, though, I notice that two of my very first fandoms are still hanging in there: Fushigi Yuugi is in Yuletide, and when I was in Japan in April my favourite band as a teenager, L'arc en Ciel, were touring to celebrate their twentieth anniversary.

Twenty years, man.
