Haha, I love Jane Eyre! GIVE ME ALL YOUR SUFFERING, LITTLE ORPHAN JANE. It's funny: I still see epically depressing stories like Jane Eyre and Chinese period romances as escapism-- maybe because that degree of passion and feeling and sacrifice is so intense as to be fantastical, and the vicarious thrill sweeps me away from my very normal life where such extremes can never exist (nor would I actually want them to) *g*.

I wonder where Buffy falls on the suffering spectrum-- it's been ages since I've watched it. I seem to remember there was an almost 'fated' degree of undeserved misery that she went through as a Slayer, but then she often overcame and turned out stronger and more determined because of it.
